Bullock County Schools is a small rural Alabama district tabbed to participate in the state’s Black Belt Initiative aimed at boosting math and science instruction. As a small district, Bullock County did not have a communications person on its staff until it hired a Community Engagement specialist tasked with increasing the profile of the three-school district.
Nichols Strategies developed a training program for Bullock County’s newly hired community engagement specialist that included coaching, job-embedded professional development, and counsel to the Superintendent and engagement specialist. Our work also focused on ways for Bullock County to strengthen and expand its engagement with the community.
Through our partnership, Bullock County’s community engagement specialist secured media coverage for the district around its literacy efforts. Bullock County also produced several communications collateral that the Superintendent used to present at events in the state related to the Black Belt Initiative. The community engagement specialist also learned how to produce a weekly cadence of communication for stakeholders that was distributed through Bullock County’s various communication channels.

"A hallmark of their partnership, the team from Nichols Strategies intentionally focused on deeply understanding SCUSD's community context in order to integrate existing district structures, tools, and systems that allowed for seamless implementation of a customized strategic communication plan."
"I think they have the ability to be a strategy partner. It's not like they have a menu and they say, do you want the number 6? It's a lot of back and forth, relational, conversational, exploratory conversations to see what underlies the issue or the opportunity that is available."
"The team is forward-thinking, has expertise in working with education leaders, and is viewed as thought leaders within the K-12 school and public relations community."
