October Employee Highlights: Principal’s Month & Beyond!

By Nikki Svec

October is soon approaching, a month that brings a bevy of opportunities to highlight your school district’s employees. October brings Principal’s month, National Custodian’s Day on Oct. 2nd, and World Teacher’s Day on Oct. 5th.This is not only an opportunity to show appreciation to your employees, but also a chance to showcase your district in a positive light. Get creative with your employee promotions and try out some of the below ideas for your team to highlight employees on your communication platforms for each employee awareness date.

Use Student Voices

Who speaks the truth better than children themselves? Have students share what they like about the employee, and what it is like having them at their school. This is a sweet yet authentic way to feature the employee. This can be done in a video, as a written quote accompanied by a photo of the student, or have students create art pieces that reflect their appreciation.

A Day in the Life

Reflect the hard work of your employees by showing all that they do on a daily basis for students and staff. This could be done by using video clips of them throughout the day in action, or a visual narrative of their daily actions with text to aid the storytelling.

Fun Facts

Ask the principal, custodian(s), teacher(s), you want to feature for fun or unexpected facts about them to share with the community. This can be a great way to show them in a different light to staff, families, and students. Highlighting them as individuals will make others more acquainted to them, building levels of trust.

Showcase Staff Gratitude

Giving thanks is what employee recognition is all about! Demonstrate gratitude by having staff share what they like most about working with the honored employee. This could be their favorite memories, attributes, or how they make an impact.

Blast from the Past

Showcase a photo of the recognized employee from when they were in school and share a snippet of their career journey and what lead them to education. This is an endearing way to highlight their purpose and the passion they have for what they do.

While October brings great opportunities to showcase the great work of your employees, don’t limit it to one month! Make creative and meaningful employee recognitions an ongoing part of your school district’s culture.
